A microrelief formation as a result of corrosion of thin ferromagnetic iron films

The corrosion of Fe films with thickness of 500 nm in a solution of 30% CH3COOH possesses localized nature and it gives rise to the relief «pattern» on the film surface. As active sites of corrosion we suggest magnetic domain boundaries. The treated Fe surface topography represents protrusions of 30 nm height above the film surface. These are composed of iron corrosion products. Under the protrusions there are recesses in the film volume, which are formed as a result of oxidation reaction of Fe. For the analysis of experimentally gathered microscopic images we developed a set of programs which were based on a technology of «cloud computing».

Keywords: thin magnetic films, electron beam evaporation, corrosion, surface phenomena, software development.
